How to Search Cases by Name
Utah Courts Xchange is the main public route into Washington County District and Justice Court records. A name by itself often pulls dozens of hits. Filter by court level, Washington County scope, case type, and filing dates. That separates people who share a name. Need variations or middle initials? The Xchange search help page explains that an asterisk works in the first-name field.
- Choose District Court, Justice Court, or both based on the likely claim or charge.
- Enter the last or company name, then add the first name or wildcard as needed.
- Limit the scope to Washington County or one known court and add a date range.
- Compare the court, filing date, party code, and case number before opening the history.
Every search action carries a charge, even one that returns nothing useful. Tighten the fields before you submit. Also keep any personal identifiers in a result off other websites.
| Field label | Type | Required | Washington County use |

| Date range | Date panel | No | Open the hidden panel |
Washington County Xchange Scope
Xchange pulls its data from CORIS, the Utah Courts case-information system. Entries appear as local court staff key them in. For District Court documents, coverage runs deepest from July 1, 2010 forward. Most District Courts had adopted CORIS by the end of 1998. Justice Courts switched at different times. So an older Washington County docket can look thin. The clerk may still hold more.
A blank result is not proof that no Washington County case exists. Recheck the venue, spelling, date range, archive, and access class.
One page of the results grid can hold up to 500 entries. Broad searches cost money and get muddy fast. Picking St. George District Court, Washington County Justice Court, or the right municipal Justice Court sharpens the docket search.
How to Search by Case Number
A case number beats a name, but Xchange warns that numbers are not unique statewide. The first two digits usually give the filing year. A pattern like 26-XXXXXX illustrates the format without copying a real identifier. Choose Washington County and the correct court before you submit it. Citations need a location too. If a number fails, check the usual suspects. Look at the year, punctuation, issuing agency, and court printed on the notice. District, county Justice, and municipal Justice records live in separate venues. Federal numbers follow a different pattern, such as 2:26-cv-00825. Only PACER searches those.
Washington County Court-Level Clues
The case category hints at the venue. St. George District Court takes state felonies, class A misdemeanors, general civil matters, domestic relations, and probate. Class B and C misdemeanors, infractions, traffic, local ordinances, and small claims belong to the Justice Courts. Washington County has no single shared Justice Court docket.
| Known clue | Likely scope | Confirm with |
|---|---|---|
| Felony or probate | St. George District Court | Fifth District Clerk |
| County citation | Washington County Justice Court | Issuing agency |
| Hurricane or La Verkin | Hurricane Justice Court | City court page |
| Ivins or Santa Clara | Santa Clara Justice Court | Shared clerk |
| Federal filing | District of Utah | PACER or federal clerk |
Still unsure where the case sits? Run both Utah court levels once, then read the court and county fields to confirm custody.
What a Case Search Shows
A Washington County result is an index, not the whole court file. Expect the court, county, case type, number, filing date, party, public birth-date data, party code, and a Case History/Documents link. Expanded history can go further, listing charges, a plea, disposition, judge, counsel, due dates, accounting, settings, and filed events.
| Case header | Court, county, style, number, type, filing date, and assigned judge. |
|---|---|
| Party block | Public party roles and attorney data; do not republish sensitive values. |
| Case history | Dated filings, events, minutes, settings, due dates, and dispositions. |
| Documents | Available public papers linked from the history and billed separately. |
| Outcome | Codes, accounting, judgments, and closure data that must be read with the order. |
For category codes, the official Utah case-code table is the reference. A short code still cannot replace the underlying order.
Washington County Search Costs
Expect fees with Xchange. A one-time guest fee runs $10, each search costs $0.20, and every document is $1. Guest access lasts 24 hours. It can end after 30 idle minutes. Unused credits may vanish when the session closes. Subscriptions list a $25 setup fee plus $40 monthly for 500 searches. Each added search runs $0.35. Confirm fees at use.
| Route | Access | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Xchange guest | Paid account | Occasional public lookup |
| Subscription | Monthly plan | Frequent research |
| Court terminal | Free where available | Search without remote fees |
| State Law Library | Free Xchange access | Assisted statewide search |
Certified copies, audio, and clerk research are separate products with separate prices. A free terminal does not make a certified record free.
County vs Statewide Case Search
One system, two scopes. Statewide Xchange search helps when the Washington County venue is uncertain, while county or court scope gives tighter results once the filing location is known. Local pages add contacts, calendars, and venue rules, but the official case entry still stands on its own.
| Statewide scope | Washington County scope |
|---|---|
| Participating District and Justice Courts | Fewer unrelated common-name matches |
| Useful when county is unknown | Useful for a known local case |
| May return many billable results | Pairs with case type and year |
| Excludes ordinary federal files | Local clerk remains custodian |
Xchange and MyCase Differ
MyCase serves the parties themselves. A litigant can view personal District or Justice Court history, papers, payments, and linked cases, with setup through email, case number, and government identification. It supports listed self-represented filing categories. Public research is a different job.
That job belongs to Xchange. Attorneys file through Utah efiling or an approved provider. Someone who just needs a remote hearing link needs neither MyCase nor a subscription. Choosing the right service keeps a Washington County case lookup from failing and keeps identity documents out of the wrong workflow.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
Utah judicial Rule 4-202.02 sorts records into public and nonpublic classes. Sealed, expunged, juvenile, adoption, and commitment records may be withheld or redacted. So can parts of domestic or protective matters. A public case history can stay visible even when its exhibits do not. Rule 4-202.03 reserves private or protected access for people with authority. Who qualifies? A party, counsel, the subject, a guardian, a representative, or someone holding a court order. Juvenile cases never show up in ordinary Xchange results.
Ask the clerk for the public or redacted portion and its classification. No result cannot prove that a case never existed.
Washington County Offline Search Paths
When the online system lets you down, try an offline route instead. A public terminal sits inside a participating courthouse. The Utah State Law Library offers free Xchange access. Need District Court records? Call the Fifth District Clerk at (435) 986-5700 or stop by the St. George counter. The Washington County Justice Court answers at (435) 301-7480. For municipal matters, each city clerk keeps its own files. For older cases, think archives. The Utah State Archives Fifth District guide points you to the right historical series. Washington County civil and probate records date back to 1896. The civil index runs from 1896 through 1937. The probate holdings have some gaps. Give the archives the court, the names, and an approximate year. Add the record type you want. Once you know what exists, ordering is easy. Follow the Washington County court record search process to get copies.
Note: Confirm changing contacts, terms, and fees with the originating Washington County clerk before relying on any result.
Washington County Judgment Case Searches
Xchange gives you two ways to hunt for a judgment in a Washington County case record. You can search all cases. Or you can limit the query to judgments only. The narrower option cuts through noise when a judgment is exactly what you need. Before trusting any hit, check the court, the party, the filing date, and the case number against what you already know.
Keep one caution in mind. A judgment hit is still just an index entry. Open the full case history and read the judgment or order itself. Status, amount, and closure fields can each reflect a different event. Treat them separately rather than merging them into one conclusion.
Washington County Federal Case Search
A federal case filed in Washington County will never show up in Utah Courts Xchange. That is a common surprise. The District of Utah runs its dockets through CM/ECF and PACER instead. The St. George Federal Courthouse hosts hearings. Yet its federal clerk and database sit apart from the Fifth District Clerk. So a docket search in one system tells you nothing about the other.
PACER works with a federal case number. It also takes a party name or a filing date. Sealed federal records stay off limits through ordinary public access. A supplemental index may help you spot a case at first. Only the official federal docket can verify it.
